It seems like the situation has been evolving this way anyway, but if anyone was in any doubt, David Ornstein has made it very clear that Chelsea won’t be keeping Thiago Silva on their books next season.
The Athletic insider was doing a Q and A where he was asked about what Chelsea’s plans were for the season ahead. He confirmed that the defender would leave the club when his contract expires at the end of next season, “Thiago Silva is not likely to be retained,” he threw in as an aside in a larger answer about the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.
Ok, it’s not a huge bombshell in some ways. As opposed to previous years where the renewal was a no brainer, Silva has seen his form suffer in the last year, and this time it feels like the total refresh of the team will catch up with him.
He’s been playing an important role in the team as the one true veteran, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see another older player brought in in the next 12 months to replace him.
