West Ham United appointed Tim Steidten as the director of football back in the summer of 2023.
Tim Steidten made an immediate impact at West Ham by playing a key role in the signings of Konstantinos Mavropanos, Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus last summer.
The 45-year-old German is completely in charge of transfers, whilst Julen Lopetegui is tasked with training the players he is given to work with.
This summer, Steidten went into overdrive on his private jet, and was the driving force behind the Hammers making nine new signings.
Steidten was given total control of transfers in the summer transfer window,
And it was recently claimed by a Hammers insider that he was behind every signing we made apart from Crysencio Summerville – whether you believe that or not is another matter.
So why is he not receiving more flack?
West Ham DOF Tim Steidten getting away scot free
Lopetegui is getting absolutely ripped apart by some sections of the Hammers fanbase right now.
It has even been claimed that the Spaniard’s job is at risk.
Whether that’s true or not is unclear. However, what is certain in my mind is that Lopetegui isn’t solely to blame for our issues right now.
Steidten has to shoulder some of the blame as well.
The signings of Niclas Fullkrug, Guido Rodriguez and Luis Guilherme all seem to be questionable to say the least now.
The German is currently out injured, but there are question marks hanging over his head regarding whether or not he’s actually a good fit for Lopetegui’s system.
Meanwhile, Rodriguez has looked well off the pace so far. The 30-year-old is a very good player, and has a proven track record, but moving to the Premier League from La Liga is always tough, let alone when you’re in your 30’s.
Finally, the Guilherme signing is the one that looks the most bizarre right now. The teenager is still yet to play one single competitive minute for the Hammers first-team.
Would it not have been smarter to sign a young, pacy left-back, or an electric striker in the summer, rather than pay £25 million for an unproven South American winger? Probably.
The jury is very much out on Tim Steidten at West Ham right now, and and the German deserves just as much criticism as Lopetegui is getting as far as I’m concerned.
