Tottenham are facing a defensive crisis, with all their senior centre-backs side lined by injuries and key players underperforming. Ange Postecoglou is actively considering revisiting his interest in Borussia Monchengladbach’s Ko Itakura. The Spurs manager is determined to strengthen his backline during the upcoming winter transfer window, as reported by GIVEMESPORT.
Tottenham’s season has taken a disastrous turn, with only two wins recorded in December. Ange Postecoglou’s side endured a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day, further exposing their defensive frailties. Radu Dragusin’s recent ankle injury has compounded the crisis, leaving the team with limited options in central defence ahead of their clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
There is a possibility of a move for Itakura
With Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Ben Davies still out injured, youngster Archie Gray has been forced into the centre-back role. Meanwhile, Postecoglou is collaborating with technical director Johan Lange to secure much-needed reinforcements for the January window.
Tottenham are actively considering reigniting their pursuit of Ko Itakura, according to Givemesport sources, and remain open to testing Borussia Monchengladbach’s resolve with a formal offer. While the Japanese international is not currently their top target, Spurs have not ruled out making a move in January.
Itakura, the Japan International, is in the final year of his contract. Tottenham are exploring the possibility of bringing the defender to the Premier League when the transfer window opens on January 1, 2025. Likened to Spurs legend Jan Vertonghen, Itakura would do well to have half the impact the Belgian had in North London colours.
Spurs have kept tabs on Itakura throughout the season, having previously targeted him in 2023 before an injury forced them to pursue alternative options. If Tottenham struggle to secure deals for higher-priority recruits, they are prepared to intensify their efforts to sign the Monchengladbach star.

Postecoglou recognises the potential to negotiate a cut-price deal for Itakura if the defender opts against extending his stay with Borussia Monchengladbach. With Tottenham operating under financial constraints as they work to strengthen their squad before the February 3 deadline, this could be a pivotal opportunity for the club to address their defensive issues efficiently.
