Tottenham striker Alejo Veliz has struggled to get regular game time on loan at Espanyol
Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a productive summer transfer window where they not only added some highly regarded prospects to Ange Postecoglou’s roster but also offloaded the majority of the deadwood from their wage bill. Furthermore, the club also loaned out some of their academy kids and young talents to clubs in England, Belgium and Spain to gain valuable experience.
One of those players to go out on loan was Alejo Veliz. The young Argentinean, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla, returned to Spain to this time team up with Espanyol on a season-long loan.
However, the striker has struggled to find regular game time at Espanyol, starting only nine games in La Liga. He has amassed 747 minutes across 14 games, scoring a goal which was a dramatic 96th-minute winner against Rayo Vallecano back in September. As a result, Tottenham are considering recalling Alejo Veliz from his loan in Spain next month.

John Wenham—the owner of Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose—has speculated Veliz to go out on loan in January after ending his stay at Espanyol.
“I expect that Veliz will be sent back from his loan,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“I think that might be announced within a couple of days. At that point, Tottenham will really need to decide what they want to do with him.
“He’s probably better suited heading out on another loan, ideally in English football. This is another loan which hasn’t been a great success after his time with Sevilla last year.”
Veliz has struggled at Tottenham since signing from Argentinean club Rosario Central in 2023. He has had back-to-back poor loan spells in Spain with Sevilla and Espanyol respectively. Thus, it would be wise for Tottenham to immediately cut short his temporary spell and get him back to the club.

The South American would be better suited to get minutes either in England or Belgium—leagues which rely more on physicality and speed rather than tactical nitty-gritty. Veliz is not ready to compete for a spot in the first XI at Spurs, even though Ange Postecoglou has a lack of options in attack.

At 19, Veliz is raw and needs to adapt to the demands of European football. Having seen the likes of Luka Vuskovic and Alfie Devine thrive on loan at KVC Westerlo this season, the Lilywhites must convince Veliz to spend the second half of the season on loan at a Belgian club and get valuable minutes under his tank.
