West Ham striker Michail Antonio has finally been discharged from hospital more than three weeks after suffering a broken leg in a serious car accident. In a hugely welcome New Year’s update, Antonio has been allowed to return home, bringing relief and to fans and staff alike.
The 34-year-old underwent surgery to repair a lower limb fracture following the crash on 7 December. The incident, which occurred in Epping, Essex, left Antonio trapped in his vehicle, requiring emergency services to free him before he was transported to a central London hospital.
Antonio, the Hammers’ all-time top Premier League scorer with 68 goals in 268 appearances, made contact with his teammates via a video call before their 2-1 victory over Wolves on 9 December. Before kick-off, the squad paid tribute by wearing shirts emblazoned with “Antonio 9.”
West Ham has expressed deep gratitude to the emergency responders and announced a donation of nearly £60,000 to NHS and Air Ambulances UK charities, funded by an auction of the tribute shirts.
“Everyone at the club extends heartfelt thanks to the first responders, air ambulance staff, and NHS for their exceptional care and support for Michail,” West Ham said in a statement on Tuesday.
Manager Julen Lopetegui earlier described Antonio’s recovery as a “miracle,” underscoring the severity of the ordeal and the relief felt across the club.
Great news for all concerned, Mikey had us all worried there for a bit and it’s amazing to hear he’ll be back home in time for New Year.
