Destiny Udogie injury could scupper Sergio Reguilon’s exit from Tottenham in January amid Brentford interest
Sergio Reguilon remains a prime candidate to leave Tottenham Hotspur in January, as Ange Postecoglou continues his squad rebuild.
The Spaniard, a youth product of the Real Madrid academy, found himself frozen out of the squad until the start of December. A glut of injuries in the Spurs backline has forced Ange Postecoglou to bring the left-back back into the scheme of things. Since being included in the squad recently, he has made two appearances.
Sergio Reguilon came on as a substitute in the stoppage time of Spurs’ 4-3 win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals before making his first Premier League appearance of the season against Wolves on Sunday. The 28-year-old replaced Destiny Udogie in the first half of the game, after the Italian was forced off with a hamstring injury.

Destiny Udogie was the latest Tottenham player to limp out of action, and unsurprisingly, it was another non-contact injury. It remains to be seen how long a hamstring injury keeps him out. The Italian joins Ben Davies, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Guglielmo Vicario and Wilson Odobert on the treatment table.
Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King thinks Udogie’s injury setback could force Tottenham to keep hold of Reguilon, who has been recently linked with a return to Brentford after he spent the second half of last season on loan with Thomas Frank’s side. He thinks Ange Postecoglou losing his first-choice left-back for weeks would scupper Reguilon’s potential deal to Brentford next month.
“They’re going to need to wait and see the extent of Udogie’s injury,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.
“At the moment, Reguilon is all they have. Therefore, I don’t think any deal will be agreed in January. it would be foolish for Spurs to get rid of one of their few options at left-back.
“If Udogie hadn’t been injured, I’m sure Brentford would have taken Reguilon straightaway.”
With just six months remaining on his contract, Reguilon will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs starting in January. However, Tottenham appear keen to cash in on the Spanish left-back rather than lose him on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

However, Udogie is now set for a spell on the sidelines, which leaves Big Ange short of left-back options, especially after Davies’ recent injury setback in training. Djed Spence can operate as an inverted full-back off the left but a manager would always prefer to have a natural option, and Reguilon presently would provide that.

All in all, it would be a real shame if Spurs fails to get Reguilon off their books and get a nominal fee in January.
