Southampton manager Ivan Juric wants to send loanee Maxwel Cornet back to West Ham to free up space in his squad ahead of the transfer window.
Cornet’s stint on the south coast has been a disaster since his summer move, and it’s no surprise the Saints’ new boss is eager to cut ties.
Premier League clubs are only allowed to sign two domestic loans at a time, and Southampton’s slots are currently filled, including Cornet’s loan from West Ham.
The 28-year-old has only managed 187 minutes of play for the Saints this season. Both Southampton and West Ham have the option to terminate his loan if they mutually agree.
Since joining Southampton, the former Burnley winger has made just four appearances across all competitions. His last inclusion in the squad came against Chelsea in December.
Speaking to the press ahead of Southampton’s Premier League clash with Brentford, Juric openly addressed the matter:
“Yes, that’s the idea, that he goes back to West Ham.”
This blunt statement is unlikely to boost the confidence of a player already struggling to justify the £17m West Ham spent to bring him from Burnley.
West Ham, however, are reportedly reluctant to accept Cornet’s return unless Southampton agree to cover his wages for the remainder of the loan. Southampton may be willing to do so to create room for new signings
