The January transfer window is open, giving teams one more chance to tweak their squad before the second half of the season gets underway.
In Chelsea’s case, the rumours are much heavier on the sale side than the buy side. There’s already a huge amount of talent on the books at Stamford Bridge, some of which is not getting on the pitch very much, so there’s a bigger priority in shedding any unnecessary extra wages than there is in bringing new faces in.
One player who isn’t playing much – and isn’t likely to be too patient about it – is Christopher Nkunku. The attacker got a start against Ipswich on Monday night, but it was very much the exception rather than the rule of this season.
CaughtOffside today write exclusively today that Nkunku has become a top target for Barcelona, who are looking square in the title race in La Liga and want to capitalise by ensuring Hansi Flick has enough attacking options to keep up with Real and Atletico Madrid.
Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain have also been mentioned as potential destinations for Nkunku in the past as they also look for a January injection of quality.
Barcelona’s financial hell makes sensible deal difficult to pull off
Nkunku is a really good player who just can’t seem to find his niche at Chelsea – it’s easy to see why so many teams think they could get a cheeky deal here. If he really is unhappy and pushes for a move away, we can see the sporting structure allowing him to go – but it would all depend on the offer being made
In the case of Barcelona, it’s not going to be easy, given their financial situation. They are struggling to register players they’ve already bought, let alone buy expensive new one.
