Arsenal are reportedly exploring moves for Evan Ferguson and Evan Mooney in the January transfer window as they aim to strengthen both their immediate and long-term prospects under Mikel Arteta.
Evan Ferguson, the 20-year-old Irish striker, was the talk of the summer transfer market in 2023, with Brighton reportedly valuing him at an eye-watering £100m.
Back then, Ferguson was linked with Arsenal and other top clubs after a breakout season that demonstrated his physicality, technical skill, and poise in front of goal.
However, Ferguson’s stock has fallen sharply this season under manager Fabian Hurzeler.
Despite being fully fit, the young forward has struggled for game time, making just two Premier League starts. It’s a stark contrast to 2021, when Ferguson turned down interest from Liverpool to join Brighton’s academy, a move that seemed to set him on a path to stardom.
Now, Arsenal are reportedly weighing a move for Ferguson, who could add depth to their attack following Bukayo Saka’s injury. Ferguson’s height, strength, and aerial ability offer something different to Arsenal’s current forward options, including Gabriel Jesus, who has returned to form with six goals in his last four games.
Despite Ferguson’s lack of minutes, his potential remains undeniable, and a transfer could revitalise his career.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are also pursuing 17-year-old Evan Mooney, a rising star at St Mirren. Mooney has made an impression in Scotland’s Premiership, scoring his first senior goal in December and adding an assist in St Mirren’s Boxing Day win over Rangers.
His composure and creativity have drawn attention from clubs across the UK, including Newcastle United.
Newcastle may have an edge in the race for Mooney, given the presence of their U21 coach Diarmuid O’Carroll, who previously worked with the teenager at St Mirren. However, Arsenal’s reputation for nurturing young talent, demonstrated by the likes of Bukayo Saka and Ethan Nwaneri, could make them a strong contender for Mooney’s signature.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has not ruled out January additions, saying: “If something stronger is in the market that we can afford and we believe is going to have a real impact in the team, we always have to be open for that possibility.”
