Postecoglou confident he can overturn Tottenham’s rut
Tottenham Hotspur’s 10th defeat in the Premier League has left them firmly stranded in the bottom half of the Premier League with things threatening to go from bad to worse as the Lilywhites take on Liverpool next in the Carabao Cup. It has been widely speculated that being knockout out of the League Cup could spell the end for Ange Postecoglou at Hotspur Way.
The Australian has not done himself much good by remaining confident of winning a piece of silverware in his second season at the club. Though that held true in all of his previous jobs, the Premier League and England, in general, have some of the world’s most competitive teams for a good reason while to be bullish about winning Tottenham a trophy out of all clubs was perhaps not right.
In the aftermath of the Newcastle defeat, the manager was asked how he felt and he continued to ooze confidence as Football London quoted him saying the following.
“I have never lacked confidence. I get that the results aren’t there and I get that whether people want to accept the situation we are in. You saw the performance of Archie, you saw Lucas today he was unbelievable as an 18-year-old to play in that position. I just see so much to be positive about but we need to win games of football and usually when you play well, you do most things right you get the rewards. Unfortunately we were denied.”
The fitness issues have been unkind to Tottenham but they had a week between their previous match and against Newcastle, both of which they were winless in. Archie Gray’s inclusion in the starting eleven was enforced due to ongoing injury issues at the back, but there was no good reason for Lucas Bergvall to play when James Maddison, a player in decent form, was fit and available.

And while Postecoglou is confident in his abilities and might feel optimistic about getting the desired results, there still remains a big cloud of doubt over his career at Tottenham Hotspur. December was a time of too many fixtures and that is why Postecoglou could buy some time but if the form does not improve sooner rather than later, Spurs could have a new man in the dugout.
