Eric Dier’s time at Bayern Munich has been strange, as the Englishman was signed as a fringe player, became Thomas Tuchel’s most important defensive player for a half a year before being relegated back to his expected role of fringe player under Vincent Kompany. In fact, Dier has barely gotten to play at all, let alone start a match. Yet he will be given a chance in Bayern’s first Bundesliga game of the year up against Borussia Mönchengladbach, via @iMiaSanMia:
The first 4 training sessions of the new year have shown that Vincent Kompany is planning with Eric Dier as replacement for the suspended Dayot Upamecano against Gladbach. The duo Dier/Kim was used in almost all practice games. Upamecano played in the ‘B team’ alongside Stanišić at centre-back.
This plan was likely also why he got to start in Bayern’s recent friendly, a 6-0 demolition of Salzburg, instead of Upamecano. Though Dier will most likely return to the bench in the short term once the Frenchman has served out his suspension for accumulating five yellow cards, this could be Dier’s chance to show Kompany that he should be given more game time as the business end of the season approaches.
