Julen Lopetegui was finally sacked as the manager of West Ham United on Wednesday afternoon.
West Ham brought Julen Lopetegui into the London Stadium to replace David Moyes in the summer of 2024.
But the 58-year-old lasted just 22 games before being sacked, after failing to form strong relationships with his players, or the Hammers fans for that matter.
Graham Potter has replaced Lopetegui in the West Ham hot-seat, after travelling down to London on Wednesday to sign the contract offered to him by David Sullivan.
The future is very bright for the Hammers now with Potter at the helm.
It was clear for everyone to see that we were going nowhere fast with Lopetegui in charge.
The Spaniard was the wrong appointment from the start and was quite clearly a really poor fit for the club in general.
Lopetegui’s reign at the London Stadium was disastrous from start to finish – one that was undermined by his inability to garner a cohesive dressing room.
Julen Lopetegui should’ve been gone after West Ham lost to Spurs
Quite how Lopetegui remained in charge until early January is anyone’s guess.
The former Wolves boss was utterly clueless and he proved to be completely inept in the end.
His tactics were confusing to both the players and the fans, and he hardly excelled when it came to man-management either did he.
Now a new claim has been made by The Athletic that underlines just how much the West Ham players had lost faith in their gaffer.
Back in mid-October, the Hammers lost 4-1 to our bitter rivals Tottenham.
In my opinion, Lopetegui should have been sacked there and then – the players clearly weren’t happy with his methods at the time.
Roshane Thomas claims that following that chastening defeat to Spurs, most of the squad arranged to have a night out in central London’s Soho to try to improve morale, without Lopetegui’s involvement.
That paints its own picture really doesn’t it.
West Ham should have sacked Julen Lopetegui three months ago. It was clear that things weren’t working out then, and now we’re in a much worse position due to the board sitting on their hands.
