Tottenham target Johnny Cardoso could leave Real Betis during this January transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur are set to be active in this January transfer window after an underwhelming first half of the season. They have already started well by signing Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague, and the young goalkeeper made an impressive debut for Spurs in the 1-0 win over Liverpool in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
The victory in midweek ended the Ange Postecoglou-managed club’s four-game winless run. It also did ease some pressure off the Australian tactician’s shoulders, although his job is secure right now. He will want the Hotspur Way chiefs to move ahead now and bring more reinforcements before the transfer window slams shut.
Writing in his column for GIVEMESPORT, Dean Jones has revealed that Tottenham are seriously considering a move for Johnny Cardoso, who could leave Real Betis during this mid-season trading period.

The USA international joined Real Betis from the Brazilian side Internacional in January 2024 and has since impressed in La Liga, so much so that the North London outfit have already moved to secure a first option on him at a pre-agreed price of £25.5million. Giovani Lo Celso sealed a switch in the opposite direction, and going by the performances of Johnny Cardoso this season in Spain, the pre-agreed price of £25.5million could benefit Spurs.
Despite having an injury-curtailed campaign with Real Betis, the Denville-born talent has made 20 appearances across all competitions, registering a goal and an assist apiece. Overall, he has played 39 times for the La Liga club since arriving from Brazil a year ago.
Dean Jones adds Spanish outfits and fellow Premier League clubs are tracking the 23-year-old, but Spurs have ‘serious interest’ in his signature. They are light in numbers in the squad owing to injury woes, and that alone could accelerate a move for Cardoso this month.
-> Tottenham are exploring a January deal for Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso
A defensive midfielder by trade, Cardoso would be a great fit in Postecoglou’s system. As Tottenham don’t really have a specialist No.6, the Brazilian-born talent will have a great chance to nail down a spot in Big Ange’s XI if he moves to White Hart Lane. Composed in possession, tenacious tackler, strong in the air and a good reader of the game, he can make a huge difference for Spurs both in and out of possession.

The next World Cup is just 18 months away, and if Cardoso gets the call-up to the USA squad and goes on to enjoy a strong campaign, the £25.5million spent on his services now or in the summer would represent a pure bargain for the Lilywhites.
