Tottenham have missed out on the signing of Maxence Caqueret to Como
With the January transfer window in full swing, Tottenham Hotspur are expected to be active having started well by signing young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague last week.
Spurs’ season has largely been deterred by a massive injury crisis, though with the team still very much alive in the Carabao Cup and Europa League, and getting the FA Cup underway soon, it is imperative that the squad is strengthened.
Injuries to Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies have depleted the North London side’s backline for over a month now, forcing Ange Postecoglou to deploy Archie Gray at the heart of their defence. Thus, they want to add a centre-back to the Australian’s defensive roster. In addition, there have also been links with a few midfielders, including Lyon’s Maxence Caqueret.

Maxence Caqueret enjoyed his breakout season at Lyon in 2020/21 and, since then, has become one of the most exciting midfielders in Ligue 1. This season, though, has not been great for the player.
He has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Pierre Sage as head coach. The likes of Nemanja Matic, Corentin Tolisso, Jordan Veretout, and new signing Tanner Tessmann have all enjoyed more game time than Lyon’s academy graduate. And with the French club in a crunch financial situation, they have decided to part ways with Maxence Caqueret.
According to a report from French outlet L’Equipe, Serie A newbies Como have reached an agreement with Lyon for a fee of around €17 million, including bonuses for Caqueret. The defensive midfielder is no longer in Pierre Sage’s plans at Lyon and is expected to say yes to Como’s project under Cesc Fabregas.

The latest development surrounding Caqueret should come as a blow for Tottenham. The chiefs at the Hotspur Way had the chance to bring in someone of the former French youth international’s profile currently lacking in Big Ange’s squad, and they failed in doing so. He could have addressed Spurs’ lack of a specialist No.6 whilst adding much-needed balance to their starting XI.

And the fact that Como have struck a €17 million agreement with Lyon for the 24-year-old Caqueret represents a bargain business, which Tottenham missed out on. Now, it is time for Daniel Levy to consider alternatives if the club are serious about landing a midfielder in this transfer window.
