Tottenham, dealing with their consistent inconsistencies, are currently grappling with an injury crisis but still managed to defeat Liverpool, widely regarded as the best team right now, in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Now drawn against Tamworth in the FA Cup third round, pundits predicted an easy outing for the Lilywhites, and the match played out in an entirely different scenario.
Antonin Kinsky, who impressed both fans and pundits in the clash against Liverpool, retained his starting spot over recent debutant Brandon Austin. The biggest surprise, however, came with Mikey Moore, who was expected by Ange Postecoglou to be eased in with limited minutes but was handed a start instead. No one could have predicted that the game would continue into extra time, but the young talent stepped up and gave a fantastic performance.
Tottenham’s first half against Tamworth was disappointing, with the non-league side’s goalkeeper Jasbir Singh and defence putting in a stellar performance to keep Spurs at bay. James Maddison led the charge with blocked attempts, while Mikey Moore showed flair and Brennan Johnson struggled. The highlight for Spurs was Antonin Kinsky, whose confident display in goal was a rare positive in a frustrating half.
The second half offered little relief for Spurs fans as the team struggled to capitalise on opportunities. Mikey Moore shone again, delivering a perfect cross to Werner, who hit the post instead of scoring. Werner’s frustrating evening continued with more missed chances, while Reguilón’s brilliant run and cross to Johnson also went unfinished. In extra time, an own goal by N. Tshikuna gave Spurs the lead, followed by Kulusevski’s composed finish, assisted by Son, sealing the victory. Brennan Johnson finally got his much-needed goal after an error from the Tamworth defence, which further cemented the 3-0 victory.
Here is how we think Tottenham players fared in the match against Tamworth on Sunday in the FA Cup
Tottenham Starting XI
Antonin Kinsky: 8/10
Continued his impressive form with another clean sheet. Had little to do but handled routine saves confidently—a solid outing for the young talent.
Pedro Porro: 7/10
showed his usual attacking intent, delivering crosses and playing a key role in building Tottenham’s attacks. He won important duels on the right wing and earned free kicks to relieve pressure
Radu Dragusin: 7/10
Commanding presence in defence, Dragusin made crucial interceptions and dealt well with Tamworth’s physical approach. Continued his great run of games.
Archie Gray: 7/10
While not playing in his desired position, The youngster really fared well… While not as involved creatively, his energy and work rate were commendable.
Sergio Reguilón: 8/10
The exiled man was a tireless runner on the left flank, both defensively and offensively. He delivered a pinpoint assist for Brennan Johnson’s late goal and was solid in defence, winning key challenges.
Pape Matar Sarr: 7/10
Sarr played a limited role before being substituted and didn’t have enough time to make a significant impact. His short spell was steady
Yves Bissouma: 9/10
Bissouma anchored the midfield effectively, breaking up play and distributing the ball with precision. He played a significant role in ensuring Tottenham controlled possession and was one of the best players on the pitch today.
James Maddison: 8/10
He created a couple of chances and tested the keeper with a few shots, was the only man leading the charge in the first half.
Mikey Moore: 7/10
Worked hard and linked up well with teammates but didn’t capitalise on the few chances that came his way. His usual flair was at its best getting some sleazy nutmegs.
Brennan Johnson: 9/10
Johnson was Tottenham’s most threatening attacker, constantly looking to exploit spaces in Tamworth’s defence. After some near misses, he finally got his well-deserved goal
Timo Werner: 5/10
Werner’s movement off the ball was exceptional, creating space for his teammates. However, his finishing left something to be desired, which is bad for a striker, with a couple of efforts either blocked or saved
Substitutes
Lucas Bergvall: 5/10
Showed glimpses of his technical quality and composure, short cameo but a good one
Dominic Solanke: 6/10
Worked tirelessly up front, linking play effectively and creating space for teammates.
Djed Spence: 7/10
Offered some energy when brought on and helped the tempo leading up to goal
Dejan Kulusevski: 7/10
Came on and scored a goal, usual stuff from the Swede.
Heung-min Son: 7/10
Brilliant display from the skipper assisted Kulusevski after a stunning run.
