Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Milan Škriniar has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur as the Lilywhites look to bring in a commendable defender in the ongoing winter transfer window, and per L’Équipe, the Slovak defender is expected to depart PSG and could be on the way out this January.
The Lilywhites have been without Cristian Romero and van de Ven at N17, with the North Londoners having to play makeshift solution in Archie Gray at the heart of defence alongside Radu Drăgușin, and while they have done a decent job, Spurs do need immediate reinforcement in central defence.
Wenham doesn’t believe on Milan Škriniar move
However, despite links with a move to White Hart Lane, John Wenham, owner of the reputed Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, insists that the timing doesn’t suit the transfer. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, the podcast host said:
“I think if this transfer was going to happen, it would have happened earlier. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are just a matter of weeks away from returning to action now. Therefore, it is hardly a big sales pitch for a defender coming in to tell them that they’ll be fourth choice pretty much straightaway other than a couple of games at first.
“In addition, Archie Gray and Radu Drăgușin are doing okay at the moment, so I don’t think there is as much of a need for a new centre-back anymore.”
Beyond White Hart Lane?
Škriniar brings ample experience at the highest level in commanding defences, and that might suggest he would be a good fit at White Hart Lane; however, as Wenham suggests, the financial investment of signing a high-profile player who will probably command huge wages on a short-term basis may not prove viable.
Moreover, with Romero, van de Ven, and Davies set to return soon, Postecoglou’s side may not need Škriniar to hold up the rear in defence.
Given PSG are hopeful of finalising a deal for the defender this month, Spurs Premier League rivals Aston Villa or other clubs might be better placed to tempt the Slovakian away from Ligue 1.
