Tottenham Hotspur have been in the market for a new forward in the ongoing transfer window, and the Lilywhites have been linked with a move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford as Daniel Levy looks to take advantage of the England international’s current situation at Old Trafford.
The North Londoners did reportedly start informal talks surrounding a possible loan move for the Manchester Reds academy graduate this January, and highly reputed Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio via Milan News insists that Rashford’s brother (who is also his agent) had a meeting scheduled with the 27-year-old’s current employers to discuss his future at M16.
King has his say on potential Rashford transfer
However, despite the rumours of a possible transfer, former Lilywhite scout Bryan King voiced a sceptical outlook on the transfer while insisting on financial and cultural reasons for his doubts about the move. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, King said:
“I’d be very surprised if Manchester United allow him to go to another Premier League club. Also, there are many Spurs players who are earning big money, but not Rashford’s kind of money. Therefore, if he were to join the club, not only would it be expensive, but it would also impact the wage structure at Tottenham.
“If that were to happen, I think it would unsettle some of the players. I’d imagine Son Heung-min is probably the club’s best-paid player right now. However, he isn’t earning anywhere near the kind of money Rashford is earning.
“Therefore, I don’t think he would be happy if somebody like Rashford were to come in and earn more money than him. There are enough problems at Tottenham at the moment, so why would you want to instigate another one?”
There is a wage structure at Hotspur Way
Tottenham operate on a contained wage structure, and adding Rashford will take up a significant pie of the wage bill given his current wages at United, and that could disrupt the wage balance Levy has worked tirelessly to create. Currently, Son Heung-min is believed to be the North Londoners highest earner, and introducing Rashford on a significantly higher salary could create tension among the squad.
From a financial standpoint, this transfer (even on loan) looks like a costly prospect for Tottenham unless Manchester United agrees to pay up a significant portion of Rashford’s wages (like they did with Sancho).
