Aaron Lennon believes Tottenham Hotspur will need to dip into the transfer market this January
Tottenham Hotspur’s miserable record at the Emirates Stadium continued on Wednesday as they were beaten 2-1 by fiercest rivals Arsenal.
Despite taking the lead against Arsenal, the Lilywhites were unable to hang on and suffered their fourth defeat in the last five Premier League games. After dropping points to local rivals, they are now 13th in the league and could drop further if Manchester United win their game against Southampton on Thursday evening.
At this moment, Spurs are actually closer to the bottom three than they are in the European spots. Their 11th defeat of the Premier League season has put Ange Postecoglou under immense pressure now.

The Australian tactician, who did not hold back in his assessment of his team’s performance in the North London derby, has won only once in the last nine Premier League games and that is simply not good enough. Either Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy needs to back Ange Postecoglou in the January transfer market or finally wield the axe on him.
Former Spurs winger Aaron Lennon, speaking after the game, did not shy away from expressing his disappointment with the Postecoglou-managed team’s performance. He tipped the club to strengthen their squad in this transfer window, stressing the need for cover in defence and a back-up to club-record signing Dominic Solanke upfront.
“Will Spurs bulk their squad in January? They need cover at the back. They will be looking to cover a centre-half and possibly another striker. The squad needs strengthening,” Aaron Lennon said on BBC Radio 5 Live (h/t BBC Sport).
There is no denying the fact that Spurs need reinforcements in defence and attack after the acquisition of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Archie Gray and Radu Dragusin were once again the centre-back duo in midweek, which speaks volumes about their crisis in defence.

Big Ange has been without his first-choice centre-back pairing since the start of November. Defenders Ben Davies and Destiny Udogie have been sidelined with hamstring issues too. Solanke has barely enjoyed any rest owing to injuries to Richarlison and Wilson Odobert.

All in all, the Tottenham squad’s deficiencies were laid bare in the North London derby defeat. There are several active injuries and players such as Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski, Pape Matar Sarr and Pedro Porro look knackered from the lack of rest. If anything, the 2-1 loss to local rivals should wake up Levy and Co. before time runs out.
