Marc Guehi has been at the centre of a lot of Chelsea transfer speculation this month. This hasn’t been the first time either – we’ve been linked with him pretty consistently ever since we sold him.
But this January felt different – we were an a bit of injury bother at centre back, and there was the unique situation whereby Palace had our defender Trevoh Chalobah on loan with them, a ready made replacement for Guehi provided by us.
Various very well connected sources linked us, and former Blues Pat Nevin was asked for his thoughts on the matter too:
“I can see Marc Guehi transferring back to Chelsea, he’s the right age and he’s already an England international. The club wouldn’t be taking a punt on his ability, but it’ll cost them a lot,” the ex-winger said in quotes picked up by OneFootball.
“Chelsea aren’t completely flush with money, they have spent a lot in the last few transfer windows and they need to make sure the finances work. What they do have are several players who can be sold, they can push the value of these sales together and afford the likes of Guehi. That signing makes perfect sense to me if they can afford him.”
Chelsea still interested despite Chalobah change
One would think that the recall of Chalobah to Chelsea would have killed off any potential deal, as it puts Palace in a tricky situation at the back, gives us the extra body we need, and has potentially damaged relations between the clubs (already strained after the Michael Olise issues of last summer.)
But today’s reports say no: we could yet move for our former player, but it would have to be in the summer now.
