Manchester City won’t have to face competition from Manchester United for Rosenborg attacking midfielder Sverre Nypan, according to reports in Norway.
The Red Devils were originally among the favourites to secure the teenager’s signature but TV2 claim that Ruben Amorim’s side are “not among the remaining candidates”.
They report that City and Arsenal are the two main contenders at this stage, although there could also be other teams in the mix to snap up Nypan.
It is believed that Rosenborg are holding out for a fee in the region of 150m Norwegian Kroner, which is approximately £11m, for the 18-year-old.
Why is Nypan in such high demand?
The Norwegian had an impressive season for his club, scoring 8 goals and providing 10 assists in 33 appearances despite his tender years.
Unsurprisingly, Nypan’s performances have attracted the attention of scouts from right across Europe, including City’s who are always on the lookout for the most promising youngsters.
The City target has been compared to an Arsenal player
Considering his nationality and the position he plays, it is not a surprise that some have likened him to Martin Odegaard.
There was a lot of hype around the Arsenal captain when he came through the youth ranks. He ended up joining Real Madrid as a 17-year-old
Nypan is already slightly older than when Odegaard left Norway but he is arguably producing better displays than his fellow countryman at the same age.
It took Odegaard a fair few years (and several loan spells) to establish himself as a consistent performer at the highest level. City may be hoping that Nypan can produce the goods slightly earlier in his career if he does make the switch to the Etihad over the coming weeks and months.
