Bayern Munich HAS to extend Alphonso Davies.
With rumours of Real Madrid circling like a vulture ready to swoop in in constant circulation, it is imperative that the Bayern management does all it can to extend its Canadian left-back.
It has long been argued that perhaps Bayern Munich will not allow Davies to blossom in his best position, i.e., as a winger. However, this is where we will disagree. Alphonso Davies is the perfect left wingback, and he has been shining in Vincent Kompany’s system.
According to stats from datamb, no fullback in the top 5 leagues has a higher defensive duel % than Alphonso Davies this season. His progressive pass accuracy (89.6%) also ranks highest in Europe. Yes, he’s an elite ball-playing left back.
Bayern will find it incredibly difficult to replace the player and to adjust to a post-Davies era where the defense would be unable to recover from periods of intense attacking upon being dispossessed. Davies’ ability to fly forward and serve as an outlet for Bayern’s left winger, while also being able to burst back in time to stop counters, is invaluable and perfectly suited to this club’s playstyle.
It certainly seems like the player has taken criticisms of his defensive presence to heart and has improved that facet of his game tremendously. He has also developed an excellent chemistry with Jamal Musiala on the left, reminiscent of the Franck Ribéry-David Alaba connection that was the stuff of legend.
It is plausible that Bayern is looking to bring a right-back to the club, and that right-back could be a certain Trent Alexander Arnold from Liverpool. Or maybe that doesn’t happen, and the club sticks to Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanisic (yes, they’ve given up on Sacha Boey). Either way, for the defense to have balance and stability in transitions and against counters, having Davies meep meep his way out of sticky situations is something we can never get tired of.
And yes, anybody the club signs to replace him would be a downgrade.
Bayern Munich is in the midst of a number of important contract situation, so let’s talk about them on the Bavarian Podcast Works Show! Is Jamal Musiala a big enough draw to lure other top flight players (like Cristiano Ronaldo or Leo Messi)? Will Bayern end up paying too much for Alphonso Davies? Is Joshua Kimmich really going to leave? We cover it all!
