Christopher Nkunku landed in the headlines with a splash in recent days when reports surfaced that Bayern Munich was keen on signing him — and that the interest was mutual.
But the move could hinge on the immediate future of Bayern youngster Mathys Tel, and Bayern executive board member for sport Max Eberl seemed to throw cold water on that this week in comments about Tel following Bayern’s 3-2 win over VfL Wolfsburg.
“You can see that he’s not playing with freedom at the moment,” Eberl explained (as captured by spox, via @iMiaSanMia). “It’s also up to us to give him the time to find his freedom again. Then we have a squad that is sufficiently equipped in terms of quantity and quality. We have no interest in doing anything [in January].”
On the topic of a Christopher Nkunku transfer: “We’re extremely happy with our squad,” Eberl added simply.
So…that’s that, then? Bayern are full enough on attackers for the moment and Tel is seemingly not interested in a loan move elsewhere, even if that means more immediate playing time. But the situation could change drastically by the summer, depending on what happens with players such as Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sané, and Serge Gnabry.
Bayern Munich is in the midst of a number of important contract situation, so let’s talk about them on the Bavarian Podcast Works Show! Is Jamal Musiala a big enough draw to lure other top flight players (like Cristiano Ronaldo or Leo Messi)? Will Bayern end up paying too much for Alphonso Davies?
