Arsenal are considering a move for Douglas Luiz, but only if Flamengo sign Jorginho, according to a report from Brazil.
Wilson Pimentel reports for RTI Esporte that Arsenal have begun their preparations for Jorginho’s departure, with the midfielder out of contract at the end of the season and rumours that Brazilian clubs could try to sign him this month.
The report adds that Arsenal have identified Juventus’ Douglas Luiz as a replacement for Jorginho, though the midfielder wouldn’t come cheap.
At this stage, the Gunners have reportedly only made enquiries with the player’s camp to understand the figures for a possible negotiation.
As for Jorginho, RTI Esporte claim Flamengo are interested, but Arsenal are looking for €10m (£8.45m) for a sale. Given the Gunners signed the player for £12m in 2023, that valuation would represent a small discount.
Other than his age, the circumstances are very similar to those in which Jorginho signed for Arsenal, when he had six months on his Chelsea contract.
Globo Esporte reported earlier this month that Flamengo had opened talks for the signing of Jorginho, planning a three-year contract offer. But at the time, the Brazilian club didn’t want to pay any fee to Arsenal.
Back on Douglas Luiz, the Juventus midfielder has also been linked with Manchester City recently. David Ornstein confirmed the interest, but added that whilst Juventus are willing to sell or loan with an obligation to buy, City just want a straight loan deal.
Arsenal would probably want something similar, allowing them to commit funds elsewhere. A lot still needs to happen before Luiz ends up in north London.
