Bayern Munich’s hot start to 2025 came to a screeching halt in Rotterdam. After starting the new year off with three straight wins in the Bundesliga, Bayern fell 3-0 to Feyenoord on a night where nothing seemed to go there way, having ultimately met their fate by Santiago Jimenez scoring a brace and Ayase Ueda adding another from all three of the Dutch sides’ shots on target.
To paint the full picture, Bayern registered a total of 30 shots, six of which were on target. Keeper Justin Bijlow’s man of the match performance typified how resolute Feyenoord were in defense, especially after they had taken a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute with Jimenez’s first of two goals that came off of a long ball out of the back — Kim Min-jae was fractionally just too slow to react to the danger.
Vincent Kompany really rolled the dice in the second half when Bayern was trying to find a way back into the match with some of his attacking substitutions, but his side just could not find a way through despite having a bevy of chances. Bijlow was in impeccable form and Bayern could just not catch a break. Harry Kane, Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, and even Dayot Upamecano had decent chances in the second half, but nothing was crossing the line for the Rekordmeister.
To really put the icing on the cake from a Bayern perspective, shortly before the full-time whistle had blown, backup keeper Sven Ulreich was shown a red card, which is presumed to have come from two consecutive yellows. The resulting red card was shown for complaining to the officials shortly after Feyenoord had scored their third goal in the 89th minute that sealed the deal for the home side.
Ulreich will now not be available for Bayern’s last Champions League match of the group stages against Slovan Bratislava, which Daniel Peretz will also miss. Assuming nothing occurs between now and the end of the month, Manuel Neuer would be the only first team goalkeeper available for selection. Kompany would have to figure out who he has on the bench as a backup keeper for that match.

For Ulreich, this is not the first incident of this season where he has been involved in an instance of complaining from the bench. Earlier in the season against Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena in the Bundesliga that finished 1-1, Ulreich had a verbal spat with Die Werkself sporting director Simon Rolfes. The verbal jousts from Ulreich had to do with the amount of time he felt Leverkusen were taking to take set pieces from dead ball situations and the DFB had, at the time, threatened to fine the backup keeper after a thorough probe of the altercation.
