The January transfer window is coming into its final week, and clubs have started to put some gas on their dealings, and for Tottenham Hotspur, they find themselves in a tug-of-war with city rivals Chelsea, with the Premier League duo looking at possibilities to sign highly regarded defender Piero Hincapie.
The 23-year-old Ecuadorian defender is currently plying his trade at Bayer Leverkusen, and his performances have attracted interest from several top clubs, with the London-based duo reportedly leading the race at the moment, per SportBILD via SportWitness.
€70 million fee for Hincapie?
While Tottenham pursue his signatures, it is to remember that the German champions are now demanding a hefty €70 million fee for Hincapie, which is some serious financial commitment that Daniel Levy will have to make (especially more daunting since it is the winter window).
The increase in price comes because of the new contract that the 23-year-old penned down at BayArena, which runs till 2029 and ensures that the Red Bull-owned club remains in a driving position for any probable exit negotiations.
Tottenham or Chelsea?
For Tottenham, while Ange does boast an impressive duo of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, both of them have been continually serving the sidelines this season, complemented by their links with a move away from White Hart Lane. And signing someone who can replicate their quality will be widely appreciated among the Lilywhites faithful.
Meanwhile for Chelsea, they do have a stacked defensive roster, but they are looking to heavily invest in the Ecuadorian international as the Blues seek a leader in the backline, someone who can anchor it for years to come. And Hincapie’s consistent performances for Leverkusen have been a stepping stone that the West Londoners would love to have at Stamford Bridge.
