This probably isn’t the transfer news you wanted to hear this morning, but it’s news nonetheless: National League side Wealdstone has announced that U19 keeper Luca Gunter has joined the club from Tottenham Hotspur on loan until the end of the season.
This news will no doubt cause all sorts of sarcastic responses on social media, especially since Spurs still haven’t signed an outfield player for the first team with seven days to go in the January window, but honestly this is a pretty nice move for Gunter. He’s 19 and has capably stepped up this fall to the PL2. He’s highly admired by the academy coaches, but very likely isn’t going to be getting any first team football at Spurs for a good long while.
A loan to a team currently 21st in the fifth tier National League isn’t exactly sexy, but it is first team football, even if at the semi-pro level. This is often how it goes for young keepers — you gotta earn your chops in the lower divisions before working your way up.
Anyway, COYS!
