Bayern Munich player Dayot Upamecano has taken another several steps in his development this season. Much has of course been made of how head coach Vincent Kompany is a former center-back and therefore a good fit for helping to continue develop Upamecano’s game, but the team’s resident opera singer also deserves enormous credit for his development into the rock of the backline this season. With his contract expiring in 2026 and Bayern currently distracted by trying to complete a whole host of other contract extensions, however, it is still very possible that the fantastic Frenchman could leave the club in the near future.
Or it would be, anyhow, if the Frenchman did not explicitly want to stay. Per Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), it seems this is precisely the case:
Dayot Upamecano wants to stay and extend his contract at FC Bayern beyond 2026. The Frenchman said, “I still have time. But I’m very happy. With the development, with our team, with the relationship with Vincent Kompany. I hope to continue.”
Of course, the spoken desire to stay does not mean negotiations will be easy. For example, Alphonso Davies’ contract talks have taken him within five months of his contract expiry, despite the Canadian’s reported desire to stay at the club. Still, it naturally goes a long way in these negotiations if a player desires to stay at the club without needing to be promised additional incentives. And if Upamecano retains this desire to stay, said negotiations should end with quite the positive result, however long and bumpy the road may end up being.
