Manchester City and Liverpool are fans of Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein.
Last weekend, Liverpool were linked with a £100m bid for the former Everton player but, in addition to confirming the Reds’ interest, Ornstein also claimed that Pep Guardiola’s side have kept tabs on him:
“Liverpool (as with Manchester City and many other clubs) really like Gordon. But they are not expected to pursue the winger because Newcastle have no intention of letting him go. Even if that stance became changeable, the potential level of fee it would take to do business would be astronomical. I’m certain Gordon is staying at Newcastle this summer.”
As Ornstein says, Newcastle have no intention of letting Gordon move teams in the next transfer window but it could be one to keep an eye on.
City may need to replace Grealish
There has been speculation that the club’s record signing Jack Grealish could leave the Etihad after a season where he has struggled to get regular game time. A move back to Aston Villa has been mooted.
If the Cityzens are looking for a replacement on the left wing then Gordon would be a decent shout. This campaign the 23-year-old has been in great form, having scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in 48 appearances.
Gordon has plenty of admirers
Speaking about the England international’s progress last month, Arsenal legend Ian Wright said the player has really found his feet since moving to Newcastle:
“Can I just say with Anthony Gordon, looking at a player who has gone somewhere and has blossomed, what Eddie Howe’s done for him His movement in off the line. His finishing, his energy. We’re looking at a winger now who has firmly put himself in the picture for the Euros. Anthony Gordon looks like a problem. He’s a problem. He’s bringing seven out of 10 performances every week, eight, nines maybe. His consistency’s gone somewhere else.”
Wright has joined a long list of pundits praising Gordon, with Alan Shearer, Micah Richards, and Jermaine Jenas all having singled him out for his performances this season.
