Manchester City striker Erling Haaland says both he and his teammates “kind of knew” they had won the title when they beat Tottenham 2-0 last week.
The Cityzens still had to secure victory against West Ham on the final day of the season to ensure they finished ahead of Arsenal but Haaland said there was a feeling that they would win heading into Sunday’s match at the Etihad:
“It’s fantastic, beautiful and I’m enjoying it. I think after we won at Spurs, we kind of knew we were going to do it. We come at home with the pressure and everything, I was confident.”
City ultimately finished two points ahead of their rivals with a 3-1 win over the Hammers. Phil Foden settled the nerves with an early goal and, while a strike from Mohammed Kudus did make things a bit less comfortable at 2-1, Rodri was once again on hand to score and seal the three points.
City enter the record books
Pep Guardiola‘s side became the first club in English top-flight history to win four league titles in a row. Huddersfield Town, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all won three consecutively during their histories, but never four.
It’s a remarkable achievement for Guardiola and this group of players, with some of them having now won 6 championships over the past seven seasons.
Haaland’s second season at the Etihad in numbers
The Norwegian international has been on the receiving end of some rather harsh criticism this campaign, with pundits questioning his impact beyond the goals he scores.
However, you only have to look at the stats to know his contributions have been pivotal to the club’s success. Haaland has bagged 38 goals and contributed 6 assists in 44 appearances, which is an extremely impressive return by anyone’s standards.
