Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher says that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is the best manager in Premier League history.
Carragher believes the 53-year-old’s achievements since arriving in English football have already surpassed Manchester United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson
“I’d put Pep Guardiola top of Premier League [history]. Sir Alex Ferguson, what he did at Aberdeen, maybe puts him above Pep, but in terms of the Premier League, Guardiola has won six in seven, and he’s only been here for eight years. Ferguson would have only won his first once after being there for seven years.”
Carragher then decided to rank his whole top five where he also included former Chelsea and Liverpool managers:
I’d go, Pep [Guardiola], [Sir Alex] Ferguson, Jose [Mourinho] because he came back and won the league with Chelsea, then [Jurgen] Klopp next.”
Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger came fifth on his list, with Carragher stating that he rated the Frenchman’s accomplishments with the Gunners below Klopp as he failed to win the Champions League during his two decades at the helm.
Guardiola’s win ratio at City
While the Catalan has some way to go to match Ferguson’s 13 league titles, his consistency during his eight years at the Etihad demonstrates why Carragher rates him so highly.
Guardiola has won 74% of his league matches since being appointed back in 2016. Ferguson’s win ratio is still impressive at 65.2% but it is still substantially below what the City head coach has achieved.
Will Guardiola stay at the Etihad beyond next season?
After winning his sixth league title against West Ham last weekend, Guardiola suggested that he won’t be at City for much longer:
“The reality is I am closer to leaving than staying. It’s eight years, will be nine. Right now, my feeling is I am staying next season.”
Guardiola’s contract expires in 2025 so the club’s hierarchy may have a job on their hands persuading him to stay beyond that date.
