In the latest twist of the summer transfer tales, Bayern Munich target Désiré Doué has decided to join Paris Saint-Germain instead of the Rekordmeister. It became clear that the French starlet was going to be leaving Rennes this summer and his decision ultimately came down to either Bayern or PSG and his chose the latter in the end despite keeping Bayern in a state of suspense for the better part of the past month.
Doué rejecting Bayern PSG became the third of three transfer sagas that ended badly for Bayern. They had also been interested in both Xavi Simons and Dani Olmo, both of whom wound up going elsewhere; Simons went back on loan to RB Leipzig and Olmo wound up transferring to Barcelona. This happened just before both Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt were both confirmed to be heading out to Manchester United in the Premier League.
Both Christoph Freund and Max Eberl said there would still be business done before the end of the window, but there is now the large question of who, exactly, the club will be bringing in now that they have actually made some sales with both Mazraoui and De Ligt.
Even though they have missed out on Doué, the club is not going to have any knee-jerk reactions or go after any panic buys before the window closes. Per Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern is already looking at this as 50-60 million euros saved this summer that they will be able to use to invest in their next big signing, whenever that may come. As has long been high on the priority list for Bayern, they do eventually want to make a big push for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, and they now have funds set aside to help make that dream a reality at some point.
Bayern might have felt a bit hard done by Doué choosing to go to PSG instead, but there has also been a bit of a blessing in disguise with the way Serge Gnabry has been impressing during the preseason preparations. Going into the summer window, he was a potential candidate for sale, but as Plettenberg reports, he is no longer a on the potential sales list for Bayern and will be definitely staying this season and playing a big part in Vincent Kompany’s plans. Hopefully for both the player and Bayern he is able to stay fully fit this season and positive contribute as he has been able to do in season’s past.
