According to a report from Abendzeitung journalist Maximilian Koch (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka is really trying to make the best of a (really) bad situation.
After not playing against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, Goretzka suffered a pelvic injury and missed the WSG Tirol friendly — a key chance to show his value to head coach Vincent Kompany. For Goretzka, when it rains, it pours:
Leon Goretzka will stay at FC Bayern this summer despite speculation over his future. The 29-year-old is not planning to leave – he wants to fulfill his contract, which runs until 2026, and establish himself in Vincent Kompany’s team. Goretzka is keeping his cool despite the fact he didn’t play a single minute against Tottenham last weekend. He believes he can fight for a regular spot at the No. 8 position in Kompany’s system. For him, things will be really important when the new Champions League season starts.
An interesting part of Koch’s report is that Goretzka is “keeping his cool” about the situation. In the media (no doubt leaked from club sources), Goretzka has been labeled as a malcontent when he does not play. Even with the German national team, there were whispers that some players might not have been onboard with having Goretzka on the national team because his attitude might be a distraction.
If that really is the case, Goretzka is likely doing himself a favor by rolling with the punches (and there are a lot of them to the guy lately for him). Can he persevere long enough to work his way back into the lineup, though?
Probably not.
With the club — allegedly — already notifying him that he is in the pans moving forward, the uphill battle might just be too difficult for anyone to just grin and bear it.
