Bayern Munich has blessed Vincent Kompany with an abundance of riches at the wing position. Players like Alphonso Davies, Raphaël Guerreiro, Jamal Musiala, and Thomas Müller can also push outside, making this the most flexible position.
The downside is that these speed demons have dealt with nagging injuries and the roster depth will be required more often than Kompany would prefer. In prior years, Bayern has chosen to loan out these players but it appears that the club is content with the current players and will focus on sharing the workload within the group.
#10 Leroy Sané
2023/24 Stats: 42 matches, 38 starts, 3,215 minutes, 10 goals, 12 assists
Financials: €70M market value, €20M salary, 1 year remaining on contract
Origin Story: €49M transfer from Manchester City in 2020
Scheme Fit: Guaranteed Starter. Sané was one of the best players in the world during the Hinrunde, but a nagging groin injury plagued his 2024 performances. After EURO 2024, he had surgery and will need to rehab properly to be useful for Bayern this season. He’s a slashing dribbler who likes to cut inside and curl in shots with his left foot. He can also play as a number ten.
#39 Mathys Tel
2023/24 Stats: 41 matches, 10 starts, 1,438 minutes, 10 goals, 6 assists
Financials: €40M market value, €5M salary, 5 years remaining on contract
Origin Story: €20M transfer from Rennes in 2022
Scheme Fit: Solid Contributor. Tel is a relentless talent that fears no defender. He plays with high energy and effort on both sides of the ball. He was incredible as a super sub under Thomas Tuchel. The French teenager is primed for a breakout season. He can play on the wing but also is comfortable as a striker and might serve as Harry Kane’s primary backup as the number nine.
#17 Michael Olise
2023/24 Stats (with Crystal Palace): 19 matches, 14 starts, 1,275 minutes, 10 goals, 6 assists
Financials: €55M market value, €13.5M salary, 5 years remaining on contract
Origin Story: €53M transfer from Crystal Palace in 2024
Scheme Fit: Solid Contributor. Olise turned in a number of stellar performances for France at the 2024 Olympics. Bayern saved themselves some money by acquiring him in early July rather than August. Olise’s game is similar to Sané’s style. He loves to dribble into space and shows incredible vision for a winger his age.
#11 Kingsley Coman
2023/24 Stats: 27 matches, 21 starts, 1,725 minutes, 5 goals, 3 assists
Financials: €50M market value, €17M salary, 3 years remaining on contract
Origin Story: €21M transfer from Juventus in 2017
Scheme Fit: Solid Contributor. The longest-tenured player of the group, Coman will be a luxury player for Bayern this season. There’s still a decent chance that he leaves Munich this month, but early reports indicate that he has been the consummate professional in training. Coman is both quick and fast, preferring to get to the end line and send in crosses rather than be greedy and take shots at the top of the box.
#46 Gabriel Vidović
2023/24 Stats (with Dinamo Zagreb): 36 matches, 24 starts, 1,894 minutes, 8 goals, 3 assists
Financials: €3.5M market value, undisclosed salary, 1 year remaining on contract
Origin Story: Academy product; promoted from FC Bayern II in 2022
Scheme Fit: Rotational Contributor. After two years on different loans, Vidović is in the final year of his contract for Bayern. His quick dribbling style is dangerous, but he lacks the top end speed to be a dominant winger. Kompany plans to use him this season but they’ll need to get creative to build out a role that fits both parties.
#20 Arijon Ibrahimović
2023/24 Stats (with Frosinone): 16 matches, 5 starts, 474 minutes, 1 goal, 1 assist
Financials: €4M market value, €1.5M salary, 3 years remaining on contract
Origin Story: Academy product; promoted from FC Bayern U19 in 2023
Scheme Fit: Rotational Contributor. Ibrahimović tore his left thigh muscle last month in training and isn’t expected to be back until September. This is a major blow for the teenager who was planning to fight for minutes this season. Coaches have experimented with him at outside-back but his best position is clearly as an attacking winger.
#31 Nestory Irankunda
2023/24 Stats (with Adelaide): 25 matches, 18 starts, 1,675 minutes, 8 goals, 6 assists
Financials: €1.8M market value, undisclosed salary, 4 years remaining on contract
Origin Story: €3.4M transfer from Adelaide in 2024
Scheme Fit: Prospect. Irankunda is coming from much lower competition in the Australian A-League and will need a season or two with Bayern II to get acclimated to the European game. He had a good preseason and didn’t seem overwhelmed by the new environment. He mainly played as an attacking midfielder in Australia, but will likely be moved to the wing for Bayern.
