If anyone has been a victim of Bayern Munich’s recent flirtations with different coaches, it is Thomas Müller.
Julian Nagelsmann did not always play him in the biggest games and only really began fully trusting him in the big moments toward the end of his tenure. Thomas Tuchel shocked everyone when he started Müller against Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal in the 2023/2024 season because Müller had seen such little game time, especially in big games, under the former Chelsea FC manager.
Therefore, one wonders once more what Müller’s role might be under yet another coach, Bayern’s third in the past three seasons. According to kicker’s Georg Holzner via @iMiaSanMia, Müller himself is unsure: “At the moment I don’t know what my role will be. Football is far too fast-moving and lively for that. I’m in top shape and full of energy. We’ll see about the rest.”
Müller of course understands the situation is not unique to him and wants to set himself apart: “It’s a new situation for everyone. Of course I hope I can make a positive contribution with the qualities I have, which set me apart from others, and that the coach will want to rely on them. I’m working very hard to get as much playing time as possible — but that’s what everyone wants.”
The Bayern Munich veteran furthermore mentioned that he is willing to go into the season with an open mind and also, that being a veteran helps: “I’m going into the season with an open mind. I know that due to my overall situation, it’s easier for me to think outside the box – I know the club, I know the circumstances best and I will do my part to ensure that we are more successful again.”
Will Müller see more playing time under Kompany? It is unlikely but one can still hope so!
