Bayern Munich’s forward line has been in an odd state for years, with many stars entering their supposed prime years in attack but struggling to show their best form consistently. It was notable last season that newcomer Harry Kane was responsible for a staggering proportion of the goals Bayern scored last season.
But if preseason is any indication of what is to come (which preseason rarely is but roll with the point here) then perhaps the burden of scoring goals will be passed around more regularly. A strong majority of Bayern’s forwards got on the scoresheet in preseason and the absence of Kane throughout most of it was barely noticed as the team kept scoring. It is this impressive work that director of sport Max Eberl highlighted when asked about Bayern’s current attacking options, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
Of course, a question such as this will have referred to Bayern’s failed pursuits of Lawnball Sport Leipzig’s Xavi Simons and Paris Saint-Germain’s Désiré Doué, but Eberl chose to take the time to highlight the strength of the existing personnel: “We obviously have outstanding quality on the wings. We already had that with Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sané, who is coming back, Kingsley Coman and Mathys Tel, who should get playing time. He really made a very good impression in preseason. Now we have Michael Olise and then the creative players we have in midfield. That looks like football, the activity, the way we want to defend going forward, but always with an eye on not leaving ourselves too open. I liked that throughout the preseason.”
Naturally, the failed pursuits of Doué and Simons means Eberl saw room for improvement in attack, but that does not mean the current personnel are lacking. If they can keep up the form shown in preseason, perhaps the need to improve will disappear…
