According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the reason why İlkay Gündoğan had to leave FC Barcelona for Manchester City might not have been strictly for financial reasons. Sure, Barca is seeking to clear some monetary resources to register Dani Olmo, but it appears that the former German national team captain had issues with teammates:
In the ‘flash interview’, the German’s sincerity generated a conflict, which never completely went away, when he criticised Ronald Araujo and publicly pointed to him as the cause of the disaster. “I am disappointed, very disappointed. It was in our hands and we gave it to PSG in the easiest way. It is impossible to come back if one of your players is sent off. We felt that we had control, before the sending off. If it is a foul, it is a red card.”
And from there he went into great depth on the idea that Araujo should have left Barcola, even if it was difficult to concede a goal. Those who did not take the unsupportive words well were Araujo and the rest of his teammates. Gündogan had to explain himself, the next day, behind closed doors. The issue was settled publicly, but there was some fuzziness and resentment. It was a before and after.
Want to add more spice to this Barca drama? Well…
It sounds like a clean break was needed for both parties and each can move forward in their own direction.
