Earlier this summer, a rumor cropped up that Bayern Munich would look to let Halil Altintop leave his position as director of sport of the FC Bayern Campus at the end of the transfer window on September 1st due to sporting differences. In turn, they would hire Markus Weinzierl, a former Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga coach at Schalke 04, FC Nürnberg and FC Augsburg.
As it turns out, Bayern would not wait until the end of the transfer window to make this happen, recently announcing via their official website that the proposed switch of Weinzierl for Altintop has now taken place.
Bayern director of sport Max Eberl had this to say: “We are very happy to have Markus Weinzierl as the new sporting director for our FC Bayern Campus. He brings with him many years of experience in the Bundesliga and will give us new impetus. Since he was already active as a player for FC Bayern, he knows what is important in this club, not least in the development of young players. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Halil Altintop, to whom we wish all the best for his future.”
Director of Youth Development Jochen Sauer added: “I am looking forward to working with Markus Weinzierl, who is coming to our FC Bayern Campus with great motivation for his job. At the same time, I would like to thank Halil Altintop. Whether as a coach or as sporting director: he has always given his whole heart and soul to FC Bayern. We wish him all the best for his future.”
The new guy himself, Weinzierl, had his own bit to say: “I am really looking forward to my new role and to returning to FC Bayern’s youth department after 25 years. I would like to pass on my experience and will do everything I can to ensure that the successful work at the FC Bayern Campus continues.”
Finally, Altintop offered his goodbye: “I would like to thank FC Bayern for the successful time we spent together – and for the opportunities I was given at the FC Bayern Campus. We were able to introduce some players to the first team and continuously develop the youth section. I was able to learn a lot and wish this club continued great success, not least in its youth section.”
