Lothar Matthäus has a firm grasp on the club culture at Bayern Munich and the legend-turned-pundit can firmly say that Thomas Tuchel did a lot of damage to it.
“Last year they had the same quality in the team but communication between the coach and players was not perfect,” Matthäus said (as captured by The Independent). “Bayern means ‘we are a family’ and this we have to live by day after day. Kompany is the coach who can bring that atmosphere back to the team.”
Man management, tactics, and strategy will occupy much of Kompany’s time, but helping Bayern Munich rebuild its strong sense of culture will be an ongoing project in the background.
Even with all of that on his plate, wins will matter and Matthäus says Kompany will have a lot of heat on him to lead the team to trophies…now.
“They have less pressure in Leverkusen than Munich this season,” said Matthäus. “Leverkusen don’t have to win. Bayern, after their last two seasons, not only have to win but have to perform as well. Now that is pressure.”
Welcome to the show, Mr. Kompany…
