German football legend Lothar Matthäus has thrown his support behind Bayern Munich’s star Joshua Kimmich as the next captain of Germany’s national team. Matthäus, who captained Germany to World Cup glory in 1990, believes Kimmich embodies the qualities needed to lead the team.
“A lot speaks for Joshua Kimmich now. I’m a fan of his,” Matthäus stated in an interview (captured by @iMiaSanMia), praising Kimmich’s versatility and leadership on the pitch. “He can play at a world-class level in two positions. He leads the way, he hits the nail on the head, he’s highly intelligent and can read the game,” he added, highlighting Kimmich’s footballing intellect and ability to inspire his teammates.
In addition to his endorsement of Kimmich, Matthäus also sees a strong leadership role for Jonathan Tah. “I see Jonathan Tah as vice-captain. He also takes responsibility and has shown that for years in Leverkusen,” Matthäus noted, emphasizing Tah’s consistent performance and reliability.
With Germany’s older generation, and arguably more qualified players, retiring from the international squad, Julian Nagelsmann doesn’t exactly have the biggest roster in terms of captain material. Perhaps his next best option is indeed Kimmich.
Matthäus’ comments reflect the growing anticipation surrounding the selection of Germany’s new captain, as the team looks to rebuild and reclaim its status among the world’s elite under fresh leadership.
