Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany hit the podium ahead of coaching in his first Bundesliga opener with the club.
The Bavarians will take on Wolfsburg in what should be a nice way for Kompany to get his feet wet in Germany’s top flight.
“(Wolfsburg is) a team who can make it into Europe this season. We’re playing against a strong side, it’s a tough away match. For me it’s important that we show character. We want to stick to the line that we’ve seen in preseason, where the team are getting better and better,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We want to win every game, that’s our mindset. We always have to respect our opponents. Leverkusen did superbly last year. I think we’ll need around 90 points again this season to win the title. To do that, we need the best performance from everyone.”
Kompany has been working hard to sort out his starting XI, but said that nothing is set in stone for the squad just yet. With a team so deep, things could change over the course of the season.
”At the beginning, you have to make the effort to get an idea of the starting XI quickly. You only get to know the players better as you progress. You need a clear line, but sometimes it’s also a feeling – the opponents may change something, a player may not perform so well in training. You have to keep some freedom and also listen to your instincts, otherwise a computer could also do it,” said Kompany.
For newcomers like Michael Olise and João Palhinha, a starting nod could be in play, but Kompany would not divulge that information.
“There’s a good chance they’ll play a lot this season. But for tomorrow, give me another 24 hours to hide that,” Kompany noted. “I’m not nervous, I’m looking forward to the first Bundesliga match. It’s a big challenge. We’ve prepared ourselves well with the team and the staff. It’s down to the players who play tomorrow. I’m excited.”
