Harry Kane’s debut season at Bayern Munich was absolutely phenomenal on an individual level as he won the Golden Boot and threatened to break Robert Lewandowski’s single season Bundesliga goal scoring record for most of the season. However, the team’s success dwindled and there was always that undercurrent of belief that perhaps the team would have been more successful if they had been able to fit Kane better into the team.
That was the narrative that Neuer engaged with in an interview with the Bundesliga’s official website, as the legendary German goalkeeper was asked if he believed Kane could be better integrated into the side next season. His answer certainly was not a no:
“It’s important for Harry and for our game that the passes into the box are very short. If we win the ball high up the pitch or are in possession around the box, it’s important that we get him into the game because he proved last year that he is very dangerous in front of goal. He can score with every part of his body: he is good with his head and with both feet and he has a great shot on him.
He is an out-and-out striker and we can always rely on him. He is very open and communicative, and he has the classic British sense of humour just like Eric Dier, which I like a lot. He is a very good team player and captain, and he does our team a lot of good.”
Bayern will need those striking qualities as they attempt to navigate their way through what promises to be an incredibly dense and difficult season. What Bayern does not need is that classic British sense of humor because everybody knows the English have never made a good joke. Hopefully Bayern will be able to overcome the distractions of horrible English witticism and persevere this season.
