More than ever, Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen wants his club to get back to winning titles. After a year of not securing any championship trophies, the Bavarians believe they are well-equipped to end what they hope to be a brief drought.
“Our goal is the same as every year – We always want to win everything possible. The most honest title, which is played over the longest distance, is the Bundesliga. But we also have ambitions in the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League. The squad was a challenge before this season, so we invested heavily. It’s not about maximum economic profit, but maximum sporting success,” Dreesen told Tz (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The CEO also addressed some concerns that the club spent more on player acquisitions than it made on player sales during the transfer window.
“The transfer window is not over yet. We’re financially strong enough to be able to buy first and sell later. The foundation for that has been laid by prudent management over the past 25 years. That now gives us the power to be able to make some payments in advance,” said Dreesen. “We dared to make major transfers that we were confident about. Nevertheless, I would be reluctant to compare us with Premier League clubs, who are firstly light years ahead of us in terms of their income from TV marketing and secondly have largely different ownership structures to us. In contrast, we have to refinance ourselves and get by without donations from states or wealthy private individuals.”
