Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was handed the keys to a fine, well-engineered automobile when he was hired.
Even with a sweet, luxurious rig this, though, Kompany has do some maintenance. The awkward situation surrounding Leon Goretzka is one of those area where Kompany has to do some fine-tuning.
A midfielder by trade, Goretzka is showing his worth and versatility to Kompany by playing center-back, too. Kompany has been impressed with the 29-year-old.
“He’s already shown he can do that. Luckily we have several players who can play in different positions, like Konni (Laimer) and Joshua (Kimmich). Leon has done well. The players are used to being flexible,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
One of the reasons that Goretzka is looking at less time in the midfield is that Kompany has used Joshua Kimmich back at the position, instead of at right-back where he finished the season under Thomas Tuchel.
“Josh has always had the potential to play at right-back for many years of his career. But with Sacha (Boey) and Stani (Josip Stanišić), we just had two fantastic right-backs as well. We were very happy with that. As an option in the season, everything is always possible. But for me where I see Josh best, where I really enjoyed observing him was in midfield,” said Kompany. “That’s why he’s there. He’s not playing there because he’s Kimmich. He’s playing there because he’s showing every day in training that he deserves to be picked there. It looks like he’s enjoying it as well. So, everybody’s happy.”
To keep everything progressing and to hopefully prevent things from escalating in the locker room with all players, Kompany said he is establishing clear lines of communication with his squad.
“It’s important to focus on how you communicate with the players individually. The players appreciate it when you get your message across. I’ve gained a lot of experience at this level and know how a dressing room works,” Kompany stated.
