The current Bayern Munich team has a bit of new-look vibe side under first-year manager Vincent Kompany. It has been years now since the Sextuple triumph under Hansi Flick, and one thing is clear: Bayern needs to get back to winning silverware. Preferably lots of it.
The task to rebuild Bayern has fallen to, along with Kompany, board member for sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund. But that is far easier said then done.
“We’re trying to implement things over time according to Christoph’s and my ideas and change certain things. Bayern Munich is not immune to generating income by selling players. We cannot keep all of our top players, even though people would like us to. That would be nice, but we otherwise cannot manage the wage structure. Accordingly, we have to find a healthy mix between income and expenditure and at the same time have a competitive squad in order to win the Champions League. We have to move within this balance,” Eberl recently explained to Sky Sport (via @iMiaSanMia).
Bayern has already said goodbye to Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt, both of whom left for Manchester United in the Premier League. Moves can still be made and one gets the sense that Eberl is not done shipping veterans out of Munich, whether in this or future transfer windows. On the expenditure side, the club has signed Hiroki Itō, Michael Olise, and João Palhinha so far this summer in addition to getting Josip Stanišić back from his Bayer Leverkusen loan spell.
Balancing the wage structure is a difficult task, but one Eberl is no stranger to navigating from his previous tenures at both RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach. How will his Bayern era go?
