For Bayern Munich, the summer transfer window has been moderately busy thus far, but it is edging closer towards its conclusion with question marks still looming large in certain areas of the squad. Most of the business has been spearheaded by board member for sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund in concert with the rest of the club’s front office, executive board, and supervisory board. Vincent Kompany has also remained as tight-lipped as possible when asked about the club’s squad planning, so much to the point where Bayern now have Eberl and Freund sit in on press conference to be able to field all of the transfer related questions instead of the Belgian manager.
Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have been the two high profile departures from the club this summer, having both left for Manchester United, but the window is not closed yet, and there could still be some movement.
In the latest twist of the transfer tale(s), football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has suggested that winger Kingsley Coman is still potentially waiting for a move away from Bayern this summer (as per @iMiaSanMia). His current contract with the Rekordmeister runs through June 2027, having last signed an extension back in January of 2022 when Julian Nagelsmann was still the manager of the club.
For Bayern, one point of concern is the fact that Coman earns wages of 17 million euros per year, which is among the top ten earners of the club. As things stand, Leon Goretzka, Thomas Müller, Manuel Neuer, Harry Kane, Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry, and Leroy Sané are the players that are on higher wages than him.
As Eberl has alluded to, with the signings Bayern has already made this summer, reducing some of the wage bill was certainly part of the decision to let both De Ligt and Mazraoui leave. Former club president Uli Hoeneß had been outspoken earlier this summer with his opinion that Bayern needed to sell players to be able to do any more business having already signed Hiroki Ito, Michael Olise, and João Palhinha.
Barcelona was one of several clubs across Europe that had shown interest in signing Coman. For him, that destination would see a reunion with former Bayern and Germany manager Hansi Flick, for whom he scored the winning goal to win the 2020 Champions League final over Paris Saint-Germain is Lisbon, Portugal. Whether a suitable offer comes from Barcelona or somewhere else, Bayern is open to the possibility of agreeing to a loan deal with an obligation or option to buy clause attached.
