Bayern Munich Frauen have won the first Supercup in team history!
The Frauen Supercup — like the men’s competition — is between the winners of the Frauen-Bundesliga (Bayern) and the winners of the DFB Pokal der Frauen (Wolfsburg). Unlike the men’s competition, this was played a neutral site in Dresden. This was the first time since 1997 that the DFB has organized a Frauen Supercup.
Bayern got the competitive season off with a bang with a goal from Klara Bühl after only nine minutes. A bad giveaway from Wolfsburg at the top of the their own penalty box fell kindly for Pernille Harder who casually laid it off for Bühl, who slotted it past the keeper.
After a hot start, you would have thought that we would see a high scoring affair, but this was not the case. Bayern had a few more solid chances but could not put them away. Wolfsburg also had a few chances, but Mala Grohs came up big time and time again — like Bayern fans have gotten used to — and earning the shutout and the 1-0 win.
Bayern’s celebrations will likely be short lived, as the start of their league season is on Friday. They begin the defense of their back to back season titles when they travel to face Turbine Potsdam.
