Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka did not play in his team’s 3-2 Bundesliga opener win over VfL Wolfsburg, but he was a hot topic anyway for board member for sport Max Eberl to deal with.
Eberl laid out the situation the best he could.
“We have communicated clearly to certain players that it could be difficult, so there won’t be any unpleasant surprises later on,” Eberl told DAZN (as captured by Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg). “He handled it in a highly professional manner, accepted it, and delivered very, very good performances in training. That’s why he is in the squad today.”
Eberl continued on to say that unless Goretzka is sold, he will be have am opportunity to regain his spot on the team.
“If Leon is there on August 30th, he’s there. We would be naive to send a player to the stands if he is better than those on the pitch,” Eberl said (as captured by Abendzeitung’s Maximilian Koch). “Players deserve to be treated honestly. If players decide they want to stay, they are 100 percent members here.”
