After retiring from international play following EURO 2024, Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer looked like he might be riding off into the sunset in May alongside Thomas Müller. Apparently, Neuer feels like he has something left in the tank and has fallen into the classic “one more season won’t hurt” territory.
According to a report from Sport Bild’s Christian Falk (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Neuer has an idea of what he wants:
Contract talks between Bayern and Manuel Neuer are set to take place in spring. Neuer’s goal is to continue his career in 2025/26. Following his international retirement, the goalkeeper now wants to focus on FC Bayern and recommend himself for a new contract with good performances. As far as the national team is concerned, Neuer has kept a back door open. If there’s need in the position before the 2026 World Cup, a Neuer comeback is not completely ruled out.
Heir apparent, Alexander Nübel, has looked solid in loan spells with Monaco and Stuttgart, but Neuer is one of the best goalkeepers of all time. Neuer should definitely be allowed to play one more year if he keeps performing at a world class level.
