Bayern Munich experienced heartbreak in 1982, losing the European Cup final to English club Aston Villa, marking the first (and so far only) time the Villans have reached ultimate European glory. Over 40 years later, however, the Bavarian giants have the opportunity to get a measure of revenge as Bayern is set to face off against Aston Villa in the new Champions League season.
But that is far from the only draw of this…draw. As captured by @iMiaSanMia, Bayern’s Max Eberl touched on various other storylines Bayern’s Champions League schedule would bring up such as a reunion with FC Barcelona and a certain former coach, before concluding on the “historic reunion” between Bayern and Aston Villa:
“It’s a very interesting and exciting format that can be exciting right up to the end. We’re delighted to be meeting a former Bayern coach, Hansi Flick, in Barcelona. A great game awaits us at home against Paris Saint-Germain. We have positive statistics against all teams except Bratislava, who we’ve never played against, and Aston Villa, because we lost the final against them in 1982. So it will be a historic reunion – and we’ll give everything for a better ending for us.”
The best Bayern will be able to in the group stages this season is equal the record against the English side, but any losing record is one too many for the Bavarians. The sooner they can improve this record, the better.
