Long-time Bayern Munich and Germany defender Mats Hummels is facing a crossroads at the end of his career.
The former Borussia Dortmund man is now out of contract and a free agent. At 35, he has contemplated retirement as well as a move to La Liga, but recently ruled out signing for Real Sociedad. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich enters the season with a number of injuries in its defensive ranks, and an as-yet unfilled center-back opening after Matthijs de Ligt made the move to Manchester United.
Could a return to Säbener Straße be in the offing? Not so, says Sport Bild — as captured by @iMiaSanMia:
Free agent Mats Hummels is not a topic at Säbener Straße. Bayern have not had Hummels on their list – and the defender has also not considered a return to the club [@altobelli13, @cfbayern]
As a free agent Hummels will not be bound by the transfer window deadline. But it is looking more and more like his playing days could be behind him.
